How Do I Apply to City University of Hong Kong Scholarships?

The City University of Hong Kong offers a generous number of scholarships to international students who obtain an offer to study in one of their available degree programs. It recognizes students who fulfill the entry requirements of the government and meet the specific eligibility criteria to start their study term at the university.

Undergraduate applicants must refer to the list of the minimum entry requirements of specific programs to determine their qualifications before applying. Students must obtain a minimum grade specified for every entry requirement. Additionally, they must have completed 12 or 13 years of primary and secondary education. They should also have an overall band score of 6.5 or above in IELTS or a minimum score of 75% in TOEFL as required for the English Language qualifications.

The minimum requirements for postgraduate degree application include the degree award certificates (Bachelor’s or Master’s), academic transcripts, documents for GPA grading system, and English Language proficiency test results of applicants. Students must also refer beforehand to specific entry requirements for varying postgraduate research and taught courses.

City University of Hong Kong Scholarships for International Students

1. HKSAR Government Scholarship Fund

The City University of Hong Kong is one of the eight public institutions offering government-funded scholarships to international students. The government of Hong Kong will award students who have a high academic standing, good leadership and communication skills, and are committed to contributing to the institution and the community. The scholarship program is for students coming from countries/regions along the Belt and Road.

There are three types of scholarship awards at the City University of Hong Kong. Out of the three, two scholarship types will cover the annual tuition fees of students who shall pursue a government-funded undergraduate program at CityU. However, students must guarantee an excellent grade point of at least a CGPA of 3.2 by the end of the second semester or semester B each year to renew the scholarship award up until the end of their study period.

There is also a special grant for students pursuing a full-time UGC-funded research postgraduate program at the university. It will cover the maximum study period of two years for an MPhil, up to three years for Ph.D. students with an MPhil degree, and up to four years for Ph.D. students without an MPhil degree.

The scholarship program is highly competitive, with only limited slots available. Students with high academic merits receiving an offer for admission at the university and paid the acceptance fee may receive an invitation to apply for the scholarship program. The university will submit its nominations to the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government for the selection process.

2. Entrance Scholarship for International Students

The City University of Hong Kong offers scholarship opportunities to high-caliber international students who successfully gain admission to one of their undergraduate degree programs. The scholarships are available to international students across the globe. Students may receive and a half or fully-funded scholarship of value up to $18,000.

There is no separate application for this scholarship at the City University of Hong Kong. The academic merits of the students will determine the type of scholarship they will receive. However, they must acquire a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.4 or above each year to continue receiving the awards until the end of their study period.

Students may receive a top scholarship with a value of HK$180,000 covering their tuition fees, on-campus accommodation, and living expenses. They may get a full-tuition scholarship with an amount of up to US$18,000 or a half-tuition scholarship that will cover half of their tuition fees (not exceeding approximately US$9,000).

3. Outstanding Athletes Entrance Scholarship

The Student Development Services of the City University of Hong Kong will offer Student Athletes Admission Scheme (SAAS) to top-performing international student-athletes. It will recognize talented and skilled individuals both in academics and sports. The university will offer these opportunities to international students across the globe who wants to pursue a Bachelor’s degree while having professional training to enhance their performance in sports.

Students may receive an amount of up to US$20,500 per annum to cover their tuition fees and accommodation cost. They must have an outstanding academic performance with excellent achievements in their sports. Applicants must excel in one of the 17 sports listed by the university to be eligible for the program. The scholarship will cover the full duration of their study if they achieve a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 2.5 or above and continue to have satisfactory performance in their sports.
