Here, we will discuss the various University of Amsterdam scholarships that are available for international students.

How do I apply to the University of Amsterdam Scholarships?

Since English is the medium of instruction for international students in the Netherlands, applicants from non-native English-speaking countries must take an English Proficiency test. If you are taking TOEFL IBT, secure a score of 100 with a minimum score of 22 in each component. For those with a Certificate in Advanced English or Certificate of Proficiency in English from the Cambridge Assessment English, you must get 190 points overall and in each skill. If you are taking IELTS, you must get an average of 7.0 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component for a Bachelor’s Degree or 6.5 for a Master’s Degree.

Prepare a motivation letter that would strongly support why you deserve the scholarship for which you are applying.

Before applying for a scholarship at the University of Amsterdam, make sure that you can comply with the requirements of the Dutch Immigration Service.

University of Amsterdam Scholarships for International Students

1. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Economics and Business)

  • Scholarship Amount: €6,000 / year (valid for three years)
  • Degrees Offered: Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and Business

The Amsterdam Merit Scholarship is awarded to a limited number of scholars from Non-EU member countries. The number depends on the annual budget set by the Department of Economics and Business. As such, only the best candidates will be chosen to receive the scholarship.

Since there is a limited number of recipients, applicants must show good academic standing, ideally with a GPA of 90-100. The requirements also include a motivation letter and a certificate of English proficiency.

2. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Communication Science)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition fees for the duration of the program
  • Degrees Offered: Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Science

Non-EEA applicants must be admitted to the Bachelor’s program before applying for the AMS. They should also be able to comply with the Dutch visa regulations. You may check more information through this link.

3. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Economics and Business)

  • Degrees Offered: Master’s Degree in Economics and Business

The AMS for Master’s Degree in Economics and Business requires a high GPA from Bachelor’s Degree equivalent to 8.0 out of 10.

Successful applicants for this University of Amsterdam scholarship have to shoulder the initial payment of their tuition fees and receive reimbursements which will be paid in twelve installments.

4. Orange Tulip Scholarship

5. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Humanities)

  • Degrees Offered: Master’s in Humanities

The AMS for a Master’s Degree in Humanities is open for non-EU students applying to the University of Amsterdam for the first time.

This University of Amsterdam scholarship is competitive, so applicants must possess a GPA of 3.7 in US standards, First Degree in UK standards, Cum Laude in the Dutch System, or equivalent. You may check the NUFFIC Standards to confirm if you meet the grade requirements.

6. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Law)

  • Degrees Offered: LLM program

International students who aim to avail themselves of the AMS for Law must be provisionally admitted to the English-taught LLM program of the Amsterdam Law School. They must have no prior Master’s Degree from the University of Amsterdam.

7. Mr. Julia Henriëtte Jaarsma-Adolfs Fund Scholarship

  • Scholarship Link
  • Scholarship Amount: €16,000 for tuition fees and €8,500 for allowance per year
  • Degrees Offered: LLM program

The Mr. Julia Henriëtte Jaarsma-Adolfs Fund Scholarship is awarded to outstanding students who belong to the top 10% of their class. Applicants must be conditionally admitted to the LLM program of the Amsterdam Law School.

This scholarship takes into account the quality of the university where the applicants have earned their Bachelor’s Degree. Applicants must also provide proof of excellent performance in extracurricular activities such as university or student councils, sports, or music.

8. Amsterdam Merit Scholarship (Science)

  • Scholarship Amount: tuition fees and part of the living expenses (to be determined)
  • Degrees Offered: MSC Program

Applicants for the AMS for Science must first submit a complete application for a Master’s program. They must have completed their undergraduate degree not more than three years before applying for this University of Amsterdam scholarship. To check the available programs, please click here.

International students may also apply for scholarships from external sources for the Master’s Programs in Science or more Amsterdam Merit Scholarships for a Master’s Degree in Social and Behavioral Sciences.
