The University of Science and Technology in Daejeon, South Korea, is a government-funded graduate school. It offers Master’s Degree and Doctoral Degree courses. The university officially opened its doors in 2004 after the revision of the Government-Funded Research Institute Act.

Its purpose is to provide on-site problem-based research and a training ground for creative individuals. The goal is to help them transition into research and industrial fields easily. UST has 32 institutes all over South Korea. Twenty-one of these institutes are in Daejeon along with the UST headquarters.

Despite being a relatively new university, UST has strong visions for its future. It aims to become a world-leading research institute and be recognized nationally and internationally. Currently, the university has equipped its campuses with cutting-edge technology and facilities to facilitate world-class research and studies.

As a result, the University of Science and Technology has become an attractive destination for international students seeking postgraduate research and studies. Another perk is that there are many scholarships at UST for international students. Around thirty-three percent of its student body are international students.

How do I apply to the University of Science and Technology Scholarships?

International students at the University of Science and Technology in South Korea can receive tuition support and monthly allowance. To qualify for them, applicants must follow the admission guidelines. You may check the schedule provided for the admission guidelines indicated on this page. Applicants must avoid simultaneously applying for General Admission, International Admission, i-Core, or Early Admission. Otherwise, the admission department will revoke all applications.

Applicants must follow six steps in the international admission process. First, the university will post the admission guidelines for the upcoming semester on the website. Next, interested applicants must submit documentary requirements before the deadline. After the document screening, the university will announce the list of prospective applicants. After that, the applicants must go through an in-depth interview. Then the university will announce the final list of successful applicants. Finally, the successful applicants may register for admission.

Applicants need to submit one or two recommendation letters written in English. Eligible referees or recommenders are former university advisor or former or current direct supervisors at the workplace. Recommenders must download, fill out, and send the letters through e-mail or post via authorized courier services. The university expects to receive the documents before the deadline of submission.

UST requires applicants to submit a research proposal. You may upload the proposal to the online admission system. Applicants don’t need to contact a prospective supervisor from the university before the application. You may find a suitable advisor from the university’s recommendation after the advisor-student consultation.

The university offers courses in both English and Korean. International students may select from these two languages. UST also offers online and offline Korean language courses to students who want to learn the language.

Nationals from non-native English-speaking countries need to submit English language proficiency test certificates from any of the following: TOEFL iBT, TOEFL PBT, IELTS, or New TEPS. Test scores must be at most two years old.

Applicants with degrees or at least a one-year education from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, or South Africa do not need to submit an English language proficiency test certificate.

UST recognizes that some countries teach using English as the medium of instruction. Because of this, students from these countries may instead submit the Certificate of English as Medium of Instruction. The list of UST-designated countries is as follows: Belize, Bhutan, Cambodia, Cameroon, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, Ghana, Guyana, Kenya, Kiribati, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Republic of Gambia, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Solomon Is. Sri Lanka, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Tonga, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, Zimbabwe. Students from these countries may defer the submission of English language proficiency test scores until the thesis submission deadline.

The university might request supplemental documents during the screening process. Be sure to submit the said documents within the given timeline.

Spring semester admission applications generally begin in September, while Fall semester admission applications begin in March.

International students must subscribe to the National Health Insurance while in Korea and shoulder the insurance premium cost. You will then receive the same insurance benefits as Korean citizens.

University of Science and Technology Scholarships for International Students

1. Ethiopian Government Scholarship

Residents of Ethiopia may apply for the Ethiopian Government Scholarship. The Ethiopian Ministry of Science and Higher Education provides tuition fees, round-trip airfare, and book allowance. Meanwhile, the UST main office covers the application and entrance fees. Successful applicants may also receive monthly living allowances from both the UST campus and the Ministry. The campus provides at least KRW12,000,000, while the Ministry provides KRW6,900,000.

Applicants must be below 45 years old and hold a Master’s Degree and at least two years of full-time work experience in one of the thirteen institutes in Ethiopia recognized by the University of Science and Technology.

2. Ph.D. Scholarship

Doctoral Degree students at UST can receive a UST scholarship consisting of a monthly allowance worth KRW1,600,000 and tuition support worth KRW2,500,000 per semester.

Ideally, applicants must already possess a Master’s Degree before applying. If you are currently enrolled in a Master’s Degree course, you must earn your Master’s Degree by February for the Spring Semester or August for the Fall Semester.

3. Master’s Degree Scholarship

Qualified international students at UST can receive the standard tuition support worth KRW2,500,000 per semester. In addition, they can receive a minimum of KRW1,200,000 for a monthly allowance as part of this UST scholarship.

Applicants must have a Bachelor’s Degree or expect to earn it by February for the Spring Semester or August for the Fall Semester.
