Slovakia is a small country in Europe surrounded by Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Ukraine, making them accessible for adventurous international students. After numerous national and international political conflicts, Slovakia had finally gained full independence in 1993. However, since 1992, several universities and higher education institutions in the country have made significant academic reforms to pursue a higher level and quality of education. As a result, Slovakia has produced globally recognized universities and specialized schools.

The country has been a member of the European Union since 2004. 1. Alexander Dubček University of Trenčin

The Alexander Dubček University of Trenčin (TnUAD) is a pretty young public university established in 1997 due to the lack of university in the Trenčin region despite the high number of engineering, medical, consumer, and research industries and organizations. The university launched a FunGlass Center in 2016, which helped it gain recognition for innovation.

This affordable university in Slovakia offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs under four faculties and one department: Healthcare, Industrial Technologies, Social & Economic Relations, Special Technology, and the Department of Political Science.

TnUAD has established partnerships with international education programs, such as the Erasmus+, CEEPUS, and SAIA. It also has bilateral agreements with 26 higher education institutions in 13 countries. These partnerships and agreements provide TnUAD students and staff opportunities to experience a period of study abroad. 2. Matej Bel University

The city of Banská Bystrica has a long history of education dating back to the 13th century, but it was only in 1992 when the Matej Bel University (MBU) was officially established from the merger of two old institutions in the city: The College of Economics of Services and the Pedagogical Faculty.

This cheap university in Slovakia currently offers courses under six faculties: Arts, Economics, Education, Law, Natural Sciences, and Political Science & International Relations. It also offers three Bachelor’s, four Master’s, and four Ph.D. programs in English. In addition, the university provides winter and summer online courses across its six faculties.

3. Catholic University of Ružomberok

After more than a decade of planning, the Catholic University of Ružomberok (CU) is an affordable university in Slovakia that was formally established in 2000. It managed to retain its religious identity despite officially becoming a public university in 2002. It started with two faculties: Pedagogy and Philosophy. Currently, the university has four faculties with the addition of Theology and Health.

CU has established partnerships with over 100 universities in around 30 countries. It aims to expand its internationalization initiatives further by participating in the Erasmus+ exchange program and the Erasmus+ KA107 Project. These programs aim to help interested students and staff acquire foreign language skills, enrich intercultural and professional competencies, and develop intercultural sensitivities.

More international involvement of the Catholic University of Ružomberok includes the Jean Monnet Activities, the Central European Exchange Program for University Studies (CEEPUS), and the National Scholarship Program (NSP) of the Slovak Republic supports the mobility of international students and staff.

4. Technical University in Zvolen

With a long history that can be traced back to the mid-1700s, the University of Forestry and Wood Sciences and Technology officially opened in 1952 in Zvolen with two faculties: Forestry and Wood Sciences & Technology. It later acquired its current name, Technical University in Zvolen (TUZVO), in 1992.

The university eventually expanded its course offerings with the addition of two more faculties: Technology and Ecology & Environmental Sciences. It currently has 32 Bachelor’s, 35 Master’s, and 32 Ph.D. programs under its four faculties, and prospective students can select among the numerous part-time and full-time courses.

5. University of Economics in Bratislava

The College of Commerce opened in Bratislava in 1940 and was later renamed the University of Economics in Bratislava (UEBA) in 1992. Along with the name change, the institution also made relevant reforms in its teaching values, content, and form.

This cheap university in Slovakia is the most prominent economy-focused university in Slovakia. It now offers 61 undergraduate and postgraduate degree programs under seven faculties: Applied Languages, Business Economy in Košice, Business Management, Commerce, Economic Informatics, International Relations, and National Economy.

International students at UEBA can select from over 100 courses taught in foreign languages or obtain double degree programs in English, French, or German from partner universities.
