The Shanghai Jiao Tong University, commonly known as Jiaoda, is a world-class research university in Shanghai, China. It is one of the oldest public universities in the country and was established in 1896 as Nanyang Public School.

The name “Jiao Tong”, which means transportation or communication, originated from its founder, the Ministry of Posts and Communication of the Qing Dynasty. The university is one of the top 9 elite universities in China, known as the C9 league. It holds a Double First-Class University of the Chinese Ministry of Education. How Do I Apply to Shanghai Jiao Tong University Scholarships?

Shanghai Jiao tong University welcomes over 6,300 international students every year. Although its language of instruction is Mandarin, it still offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs taught in the English language. Shanghai Jiao Tong University also offers a generous number of scholarships for non-Chinese citizens. International students may apply for admission at the SJTU if they hold a valid passport and comply with the entry regulations set by the People’s Republic of China and the Ministry of Education.

Applicants must provide a high school diploma (for undergraduates) or above (for Master’s or Ph.D.). They must also present a health certificate, two recommendation letters (for high school graduates), academic transcripts, SAT/ACT/IB/A-Level/UEC, etc., test scores or equivalent (if applicable), proof of Chinese, and English language proficiency. The requirements may vary depending on the programs students want to apply for.

Shanghai Jiao Tong Scholarships

1. Shanghai Jiao Tong University China Scholarship Council

  • Scholarship amount: fully-funded scholarship package with a monthly stipend of 2,500 RMB for undergraduate; 3,000 RMB for Master’s; and 3,500 for Ph.D. students
  • Degrees offered: Undergraduate, Master’s, and/or Ph.D.

The China Scholarship Council will offer scholarships to international students who will pursue their higher education in one of their affiliated universities. Students enrolling in one of the undergraduate or postgraduate programs at Shanghai Jiao Tong University may apply for the CSC scholarship. This scholarship at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University will help strengthen the relationship between the People’s Republic of China with other countries across the world.

Students must be in their legal age when applying for the CSC scholarships. They should also provide their academic transcripts, high school or previous degree diplomas, at least two recommendation letters, a CSC scholarship form, a copy of their valid passport, a study or research plan (if applicable), statement of purpose (for undergraduate applicants), physical examination form, and a language proficiency certificate (preferably IELTS or TOEFL). Students who will provide a letter of acceptance from a professor at the university will have a much higher chance of getting the award.

Students must know if they have to submit the application form with their admission application at the university. However, they can mail their application to the official address of the university.

2. Shanghai Municipal Government Scholarship

  • Scholarship amount: full or partial scholarship package with a monthly stipend of RMB 1100 for Undergraduates; RMB 1700 for Masters and RMB 2100 for Ph.D.
  • Degrees offered: Undergraduate, Master’s, and/or Ph.D.

Since 2006, the Municipal Government of Shanghai has offered scholarships to international students who show outstanding academic performances in their field of study. A full scholarship with a monthly stipend, free-on campus accommodation, and health insurance will be awarded to applicants for pre-college, undergraduate, and/or postgraduate programs. Applicants may also receive a partial scholarship which will cover their tuition fees and health insurance within their study period (except pre-college students).

Students must be holding non-Chinese citizenship to apply for the scholarship grant. Applicants for undergraduate programs must be under 25 years old and have completed high school. Master’s students must be Bachelor’s degree holders and are under 35 years old. While doctoral students must not be over 40 years old and have a Master’s degree (or above) with outstanding research expertise.

Applicants for this scholarship available at Shanghai Jiao Tong University must meet the entry and language requirements of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Generally, students must acquire a level 4 in the HSK test (a Chinese Proficiency Test). Additionally, they should not be receiving other scholarship grants.

3. Confucius Institute Scholarship

  • Scholarship amount: fully-paid tuition fees, accommodation fees, living allowances, and health insurance
  • Degrees offered: Undergraduate, Master’s, and/or Ph.D.

The Confucius Institute Scholarship will award students pursuing a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degree in Chinese language education. This scholarship available at Shanghai Jiao Tong University is open to all nationalities except for Chinese citizens. Students who have excellent academic performance and show interest in Chinese Language Education may apply for the scholarship. Those working as Chinese language teachers may also receive a grant to support their studies at a higher degree level.

Applicants must satisfy certain levels of Chinese language proficiency depending on the degree they are applying for. Undergraduate applicants must be high school graduates and have at least a level 6 in the Chinese Proficiency Test. Postgraduate applicants must achieve at least level 4 (Ph.D. applicants with Master’s degree) or level 5 (Master’s applicants with Bachelor’s degree) in the Chinese Proficiency Test. They must also have an intermediate level in speaking the Chinese language.
