Xiamen University is a first-class public research university in Xiamen, China. It was established in 1921 by a Chinese-born entrepreneur and philanthropist, Tan Kah Kee. It is the first university in China established by an overseas Chinese national who stayed in Singapore. It is a well-known educational institution and one of the best in Southern China. How Do I Apply to Xiamen University Scholarships?

Xiamen University is one of the elite Chinese universities with a strong international influence. It offers many scholarships for international students wishing to finish their degrees in China.

Undergraduate applicants may choose to undertake courses available in the English medium. They must provide proof of their citizenship, hold a high school diploma, and are above 18 years old. They should also comply with the university’s rules and regulations and follow the laws set by the Chinese Government upon their entry and during their stay in China.

Postgraduate applicants for a Master’s degree or Ph.D. coursework/research must be a Bachelor’s degree holder or a Master’s degree completer, respectively. They should provide proof of their citizenship, medical certificate, a copy of valid passport, academic transcripts, copy of research proposal or study plan, two letters of recommendation, and a statement of financial status/support. All applicants must meet the required minimum of English language proficiency.

1. Xiamen University Scholarships New International Students Scholarships

Xiamen University proudly offers scholarships to international students pursuing their higher education in China. It will award outstanding and top-performing students who want to undertake their Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. degrees at Xiamen University. It is highly competitive since the university will only offer 24 slots of varying quotas in different program categories.

Undergraduate applicants must have completed their high school education and not be over the age of 25. Master’s degree applicants should be Bachelor’s degree holders (or above) and are under 40 years old. Meanwhile, doctoral students must be Master’s degree holders (or above) and not be over 45 years old.

Bachelor’s degree applicants may receive a tuition fee reduction within a maximum funding period of 5 years. Students of first-class honors in a Master’s program may receive a tuition fee waiver and monthly living allowances of RMB 3,000, while students of second-class honors will only receive a tuition fee waiver. Doctoral students of first-class honors may receive monthly stipends of RMB 3,500/month with a tuition fee waiver whereas, those who obtain second-class honors may only receive a tuition waiver.

The funding period can last up to 3 years (for Master’s programs) and 4 years (for Ph.D. programs). However, students must pass an annual interview to continue receiving the benefits/awards.

2. Chinese Government Scholarship

  • Degrees offered: Master’s and/or Ph.D.

The China Ministry of Education of the Chinese Government established a scholarship program for international students to pursue their postgraduate degrees in China. The Chinese Government aims to promote the Chinese standard quality of higher education across the globe. Xiamen University is one of the many Chinese universities designated to recruit international students under the Chinese Government Scholarships.

Applicants for Master’s degree programs must be Bachelor’s degree holders and not over the age of 35. Meanwhile, students applying for Ph.D. degree programs must be Master’s degree completers and should not be over 40 years old. Students applying for Master’s in Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages (MTCSOL) or degree programs of foreign language studies are not eligible to apply for the scholarships.

Students must receive an offer to study or admission to any offered postgraduate degree programs at Xiamen University. Additionally, they must meet the specific Chinese language proficiency levels, which vary in different degree programs.

Students may receive a tuition fee waiver, on-campus or off-campus accommodation monetary subsidy, monthly living allowances, and medical insurances if they receive this scholarship available at Xiamen University. However, they must provide funding for other expenses during their stay in China. Applicants may submit their scholarship applications online after they gain admission at Xiamen University.

3. Fujian Provincial Government Scholarships

The Fujian Government will give scholarships to international students pursuing their higher education at Xiamen University. It aims to strengthen its relationship with other countries across the globe and develop talents and skills by giving a high quality of education to international students in China. The scholarships will cover their first year of studies at the university. However, they may renew their scholarship applications for the following academic year and continue receiving the awards if they pass the interviews and prove that they are the best candidates for the awards.

Students must hold foreign citizenship (non-Chinese) and prove that they are in good health to be eligible for this scholarship available at Xiamen University. Applicants for undergraduate programs must be high school graduates who are under 30 years old. They may receive scholarships with a value of RMB 30,000 per year.

Master’s degree applicants must be Bachelor’s degree holders and not be over 35 years old. The candidates may receive a yearly stipend of up to RMB 40,000. Meanwhile, doctoral students applying for a Ph.D. degree should be Master’s degree holders and under the age of 40. They may receive an amount of RMB 50,000 per year. Students must register first as self-supporting new students and pay all the fees required.
