7 Affordable Universities in Canada 2024-2025

Every year, half a million international students go to study in Canada. This large country notorious for its freezing weather in winter is also recognized for its outstanding quality of life and education. A degree from a Canadian higher education institution will open doors to many opportunities worldwide. While a high standard of living and quality education usually comes at a hefty price, Canada’s tuition fees are more affordable than other English-speaking countries. 1. University of Prince Edward Island

The most affordable university in Canada on this list is the University of Prince Edward Island, located in Charlottetown. It is the only university in the province and traces its roots to two predecessor organizations established in the 1800s.

UPEI’s undergraduate programs include Arts, Business, Education, Engineering, Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Nursing, Science and Veterinary Medicine. It has a student body of almost 5,000, 29% of which are international students from 93 countries worldwide. Almost half of the international students come from Asia, and the majority of international students are enrolled in science-related programs.

In addition to tuition fees, students of PEI University pay technology fees, fitness and administration fees, student union fees, library and laboratory fees. International students are also required to pay health insurance and an annual international fee ranging from 7,548 CAD to 11,282 CAD.

2. University of Regina

The University of Regina is located in the capital city of Saskatchewan. An autonomous university since 1974, Regina houses more than 15,000 full and part-time students. It has a reputation for providing experiential learning opportunities through arranged internships, placements, and cooperative education programs.

This affordable university in Canada has ten faculties and one graduate school that offers master and doctoral programs in cooperation with the University of Saskatchewan. Moreover, the University of Regina has three federated colleges – Campion College, First Nations University of Canada, and Luther College.

3. Brandon University

Brandon University is a public university in Manitoba, Canada. This cheap university in Canada offers undergraduate, graduate, and online courses in Arts, Education, Science, Health Studies, and Music. The university has around 3,000 full-time and part-time students and has a student-to-faculty ratio of 11 to 1.

On top of the tuition fee, Brandon students pay additional fees, including a student services fee, health insurance, and other miscellaneous fees. The total fees for international undergraduate students, including tuition for 30 credit hours and all other fees, range from 17,330.55 CAD to 18,912.30, while the total fee for 15 credit hours at the graduate level ranges from 8,021.06 CAD to 8,141.06 CAD.

4 Memorial University of Newfoundland

Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) is an affordable public university in Canada with several campuses. The majority of the programs are delivered in the St. John’s Campus. The MUN Marine Institute, a polytechnic institution, is also located north of St. John’s. It offers courses and training programs for the maritime sector. In addition, the campus in Grenfell houses programs in Arts, Fine Arts, Business, Science and Nursing. And the Harlow Campus delivers professional and special programs.

MUN claims to have the lowest tuition rate in English-speaking Canada and can offer education at a low cost due to subsidies from the provincial government. According to the university’s estimates, the total annual cost of education for international undergraduate students at Grenfell campus ranges from 19,553 CAD to 22,037 CAD.

5. University of Calgary

The University of Calgary takes pride in being one of the leading public research universities in Canada. The university offers 250 post-secondary courses in its 14 faculties and 55 departments. It also hosts 85 research institutes and centers and maintains close ties to federal and provincial research and regulatory industries. Downtown Calgary accommodates the university’s main campus, but the university also has additional campuses, including a campus in Doha, Qatar, focused on nursing education.

Some notable graduates of Calgary include James Gosling, creator of Java programming language; Garrett Camp, co-founder of StumbleUpon and Uber; and Stephen Harper, former Prime Minister of Canada.

6. Ryerson University

Prospective students of Ryerson University can choose from over 100 undergraduate and graduate programs delivered through its seven faculties. The newest faculty is the Lincoln Alexander School of Law, established in September 2024. Ryerson claims to be the most applied-to university in Ontario relative to available space. It has over 45,000 students majority of which are studying courses at the Ted Rogers School of Management.

Its graduate programs are coordinated through the Yeates School of Graduate Studies. Ryerson’s areas of interest when it comes to research include City Building and Social Justice, Design, Culture and Creative Industries, Digital Media and Technology, Energy and Sustainability, Health and Well-being, and Management and Entrepreneurship.

7. University of Alberta

The University of Alberta has research and academic programs with 18 faculties catering to a student population of almost 40,000. Four of its campuses are located in Edmonton, and another campus is placed in Camrose.

The University of Alberta has implemented a new tuition fee model for undergraduate and graduate international students. Upon admission to a program, an international student will receive a guaranteed total program fee which is calculated based on the minimum course requirements to complete the degree program. This program tuition is split into several installments and remains consistent throughout the guarantee period.
