Chevening Scholarships are awarded to forward-minded leaders of the future. Since its creation in 1983, over 50,000 scholars have been afforded the opportunity to study in the United Kingdom (UK) for a year. During this time, they are encouraged to network extensively, establish professional connections, and achieve their academic goals as they participate in a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Armed with an advanced degree and a vast wealth of knowledge, students return to their home country and pursue their dreams.

Every year, scholars are hand-picked from 160 different countries and territories. They each have a colorful background but they all possess the ability to make a lasting difference in their community and provide global solutions for the future. In short, this scholarship aims to remove any barriers that determined leaders may face when bringing about positive change. Indeed, Chevening Scholarships are conferred to those with tenacity and undeniable determination.

Scholarship Amount for Chevening Scholarships

Generally speaking, a Chevening Scholarship covers the following: The cost of tuition, travel to and from your home country, an arrival and departure allowance, entry visa fees, and reimbursement of the cost of tuberculosis testing up to £75 if required. The scholarship does provide a living stipend every month but it is difficult to report the exact amount of this allowance for two reasons. 1) The allowance amount is subject to an annual review. 2) Depending on whether you attend university inside or outside of London, the amount will fluctuate.

Two conditions will also impact your scholarship amount. Let’s look at the first condition. Typically, funds are provided by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations. If your scholarship is provided by a partner organization, the amount will differ based on your agreement with them. Universities are obligated to cover a minimum of 20% of tuition costs.

If the university refuses to do so, the FCDO will send you to the university you chose as a second option. You do reserve the right to remain enrolled at your university of choice granted that you pay the amount that the university declined. The last part of this first condition is in regards to the MBA program. Tuition payment is limited to the amount of £18,000. Any costs incurred after becomes the responsibility of the student.

The second condition is additional funding outside the scholarship package. Recipients are not allowed to accept a different scholarship along with a Chevening Scholarship. If you have received, or intend to apply for, a different award it must be disclosed on your application. Outside funding is allowed if it is being used to pay for expenses not covered by a Chevening Scholarship.

Working a part-time job is even acceptable, however, additional funds will result in a decrease in your scholarship amount. For example, an annual income over £3,000 and up to £7,000 will result in a monthly £250 deduction from your stipend. An annual amount of £10,000 is typically banned.

There are some finer points of the scholarship amount that require attention. Whether the scholarship is awarded or not depends on the availability of funds, transportation, and safe, stable conditions in the UK. It is also dependent on the recipient’s ability to secure an entry visa and obtain medical clearance.

Eligibility Criteria for Chevening Scholarships

Eligibility is divided into two parts: general and work experience. A qualified applicant is a citizen of an eligible country or territory, has completed an undergraduate degree, and has been accepted into an eligible UK university course. Also, those who hold refugee status and citizenship in a Chevening-eligible country can apply for a scholarship.

The second part of eligibility for Chevening scholarships requires work experience. All applicants must have spent 2,800 hours, or two years, working. You may be wondering how they came up with this number. They calculated it by multiplying a 35 to 65-hour workweek by the 40-50 weeks in a year then taking the sum and multiplying it by two.

Different types of work experiences will be considered: Full-time or part-time employment, volunteer work, and paid or unpaid internships. You can submit up to fifteen different periods of employment on your application. Although you aren’t required to submit proof of how many hours you’ve worked, you will be asked a series of questions about your experience.

It is also worth mentioning that you must supply two references who can attest to your academic accomplishments, intellectual capabilities, and professional character. Your reference should not be a close friend or relative. If written references are not in English, be sure to upload a notarized English translation.

One final point about Chevening Scholarships. At the end of the course, all award recipients must return to their country of citizenship. Once they’ve returned, former students must reside there for at least two years after their scholarship has ended.

How do I apply to Chevening Scholarships?

The first step to applying for a Chevening Scholarship is visiting their application page. Once there, choose your country/territory and select “scholarship” as the type of award. Before applying, prepare the following: Education documents, references, and an unconditional offer from a UK university. Only successful applicants will be contacted. No status updates or feedback will be provided.

Applicants should avoid agencies that offer to help students apply for Chevening Scholarships for a fee. The use of an outside party in the application process is not permitted. Furthermore, the FCDO does not approve or endorse any such agencies.
