The University of Sheffield is a top-leading university in the city of Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England. It received its royal charter in 1905 from King Edward VII. Its foundation in 1879 was due to the merging of three local institutions; the Sheffield School of Medicine, Firth College, and the Sheffield Technical School. It is one of the nine “redbrick” universities in England and is a founding member of the elite Russell Group. It is also one of the N8 Group of eight most research-intensive universities in England. Furthermore, the university is part of the Worldwide Universities Network, an alliance of 22 world-class research universities that promote international research collaboration. Here, we will be looking at various scholarships at University of Sheffield for international students.

How Do I Apply to University of Sheffield Scholarships?

The University of Sheffield welcomes over 29,000 international students from over 150 countries, making it one of the most internationally recognized universities. Its collaboration with other organizations gave way to many scholarships opportunities for both undergraduate and postgraduate applicants.

Students are required to have grades equivalent to a UK 2:1 average (or a minimum of B average, GPA of 3.0/4.0 or 5.0/7.0, or 60/100, etc.) to gain entry at the university. Those who don’t meet the required grades may provide a valid and good reason why they have lower grades to still quality for admission on their chosen degree.

International students from non-English speaking countries must fulfill the specific language requirements of their departments/faculty. However, those who graduated from English-speaking universities or taught courses may ask for a reference and send it along with proof of their current or latest English language proficiency levels.

University of Sheffield Scholarships for International Students

1. International Undergraduate Merit Scholarship

The University of Sheffield will award merit scholarships to 50 international students who will study in one of their undergraduate offered courses. It will cover half of their tuition fees at the university. Students must receive an offer to study in their chosen undergraduate courses before applying for this scholarship program. They should not be receiving any sponsorships or scholarships from other external sources.

These University of Sheffield scholarship applies to any subject area for undergraduate studies (excluding Medicine and Dentistry). Students will continue to receive the award every year (up to 4 years) if they score 60% or above and achieves a minimum of 120 credits.

The university will still grant students receiving or applying for scholarships offered by the Department or Faculty they will be studying in. This scholarship program is highly competitive. Applicants with an outstanding academic profile who submitted a clear statement of purpose and are committed to achieving their goals in their chosen degrees will have a higher chance of getting the award.

Students must follow the terms and conditions upon receiving the award to avoid getting forfeited from the scholarships.

2. International Postgraduate Taught Scholarship

The University of Sheffield proudly offers scholarships to international students who will pursue a degree in one of their postgraduate taught courses. Students from specific regions of the world may receive the award. They must hold an offer to study in their chosen degree programs to be eligible for the scholarships. There is no separate application needed as eligible students are automatically nominated.

The university will give a £2,000 tuition fee reduction to students who will study Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. Meanwhile, those who will pursue a degree in Engineering, Medicine, Dentistry, Health, and Sciences will receive a tuition fee waiver worth £2,500. Students may receive the award along with other available scholarships offered by their Department or Faculty. However, these scholarships do not apply to courses with higher clinical fees. Additionally, students must not be under any sponsorships from other external sources.

Applicants should commence their full-time postgraduate study on the date required by the university to get the award. Those applying for Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) courses are not eligible for the program. Students who will pursue a 2-year Master’s program will receive the scholarships in their second year after completing their 1st year of studies.

3. Chevening Scholarships

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) of the UK Government and its partner organization funds this scholarship scheme supporting international students who will pursue a Master’s degree at the University of Sheffield. Chevening scholarships available at the University of Sheffield are exclusive for those who show potential in becoming future world leaders. Aside from offering fully-funded tuition fees, the UK Government aims to provide students the opportunity to develop professional and academic skills, give them a chance to network with other talents, let them experience the UK culture, and help build a stronger relationship between their home countries and the UK.

Students must be from Chevening-eligible countries who hold upper-second class honors (or equivalent to a UK 2:1 honors degree) on their undergraduate degree qualification. They should have at least two years of work experience and apply to three different eligible courses at the University of Sheffield. Additionally, they must receive an offer to study in one of their chosen courses to be eligible for the award.
