Charles University in Prague, Czech Republic is one of the oldest universities in the world. It was established in 1348. However, it is also one of the most modern and progressive universities in the world. It has gone through multiple reforms throughout its almost 700 years of existence. It focuses mainly on research and incorporates the results into teaching. The university employs approximately 4500 academic and research staff and strongly adheres to the principles of excellence, autonomy, and freedom of research.

How do I apply to Charles University Scholarships?

There are no tuition fees for studies in the Czech language at Charles University. However, degree programs taught in English or other foreign languages cost between CZK0 and CZK400,000 per year.

The university offers online language courses for prospective international students in the following languages: English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Russian, and Czech. International students from non-native English-speaking countries must prepare documents in English or Czech language and have them certified.

You have to prepare a motivation letter that strongly justifies your qualification for the scholarship. You can support your application by preparing two recommendation letters from your previous professors. Their letters must also be in English or Czech language.

Charles University Scholarships for International Students

1. Government Scholarship – Developing Countries

  • Scholarship Link
  • Scholarship Amount: CZK14,000 – 15,000 per month
  • Degrees Offered: Master; Ph.D.

Students from Cambodia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ethiopia, Georgia, Moldova, Ukraine may apply for a government scholarship to study at Charles University. This scholarship at Charles University covers the whole duration of the study program. For students studying a program in the Czech language, a one-year provision is available.

Master students can receive CZK14,000 per month to cover the cost of studying and staying in the Czech Republic. The students have to shoulder any amount exceeding that. Ph.D. students, on the other hand, receive CZK15,000.

2. Ph.D. Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: CZK10,500 to 25,000 per month
  • Degrees Offered: Ph.D.

All full-time Ph.D. students at Charles University can receive the Ph.D. Scholarship once they officially enroll in the program. The Faculty Internal Regulation sets the standards, and the Dean will decide on the exact amount the scholars will receive.

International students studying Ph.D. programs taught in English or other foreign languages may check with the Faculty for additional scholarship options.

3. Development Scholarship from the Faculty of Social Sciences

  • Scholarship Amount: CZK50,000 – CZK75,000
  • Degrees Offered: Bachelor; Master’s (Social Sciences)

Incoming and current students from developing countries or countries undergoing economic and political transitions may apply for this scholarship. The scholarship is paid annually, and scholars may reapply every year.

Bachelor students may receive this Charles University scholarship only for the first three years of the fee-based Social Science program. Master students may avail of the scholarship on the first two years of the fee-based program.

Recipients of the International Visegrad Fund are not eligible for the Development Scholarship.

4. STARS from the Faculty of Science

  • Scholarship Amount: CZK20,500 or more per month
  • Degrees Offered: Ph.D. (Faculty of Science)

The Charles University Faculty of Science offers a fully-funded scholarship to encourage domestic and international students to pursue Ph.D. or Postdoc positions at the university.

Applicants may choose their specialization among the following: Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, and Environmental Studies.

5. International Visegrad Fund

  • Scholarship Amount: €2,500 per semester
  • Degrees Offered: Bachelor; Master

International students from Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Georgia, North Macedonia, Moldova, Monte Negro, Russian Federation, Serbia, and Ukraine may apply for the International Visegrad Fund to study at a university in any of the four Visegrad countries: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland.

The host university, in this case, Charles University, will also receive a subsidy worth €1,500 per semester from the Fund for the education of the scholars.

Eligible applicants must apply online. The deadline for applications is usually March 15.

6. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) – Program Country Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: €26,000 + tuition fees
  • Degrees Offered: Master

Students from eligible countries may apply for the Program Country Scholarship. This scholarship at Charles University covers the cost of the tuition fee for two years (€9,000), living allowance (€1,000 per month for 24 months), and travel allowance (€2000). 7. Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree (EMJMD) – Partner Country Scholarship

  • Scholarship Amount: €29,000 to 31,000 + tuition fees
  • Degrees Offered: Master

The EMJMD provides up to €31,000 for scholars under the two-year European Politics and Society (EPS) Program. The scholarship covers the tuition fee for the duration of the program (€16,000), living allowance, travel allowance, and installation cost allowance.
