You should note that there are various scholarships at Osaka University that are available for international students.

To properly accommodate all of its students, the university has four campuses. The first one is the Suita Campus and it houses the Administrative Bureau, Joint-Use Facilities, and Schools of Human Sciences, Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmaceutical Sciences, & Engineering.

Following that is the Toyonaka Campus which is comprised of the University Library and Schools of Letters, Law, Economics, Science, & Engineering Science. Next is the Minoh Campus wherein students can find the School of Foreign Studies, the Research Institute for World Languages, and the Center for Japanese Language and Culture. Lastly, there is also the Nakanoshima Campus and in it, the Osaka University Nakanoshima Center is located.

Going back to Osaka University’s students, it is a must to know that their alumni are some of the best and brightest not just in Japan, but in other parts of the world as well. These include Japanese physics pioneer Hantara Nagaoka, famed South Korean computer scientist Kilnam Chon, Maldivian diplomat Fathimath Dhiyana Saeed, Battle Royal author Koushun Takami, and the father of Japan’s whisky industry Masataka Taketsuru.

How do I apply to the Osaka University Scholarships?

Osaka University welcomes all students across undergraduate, master’s, and postgraduate levels.

Incoming undergraduate students have two options when starting their admission journey. They can either be privately financed or funded by the Japanese government. For the former, applicants can either take their entrance examination on-site or through a special means if they would like to take it in their home country.

Once they pass the exam, they will be given a list of available degree programs taught in English and they can proceed with the enrollment procedure. As for the latter, applicants will be required to take preparatory lessons such as basic Japanese language tutorials. After this, they will then go through with the entrance examination. Again, if the applicant passes it, he or she can start with the enrollment procedure.

When it comes to graduate students, all types of students (Japanese government scholarship recipients, applicants from universities with partnership with Osaka University, and privately funded students) are to follow a common flow. To begin, they have to contact a supervisor who will guide them through the whole process. What comes after this is the incoming graduate student will be asked to come to Japan as a research student and take the entrance examinations at their chosen graduate school, after which they can choose which course to pursue.

Osaka University only has 2 undergraduate programs and 13 graduate programs taught in English. All programs are taught in Japanese. For this reason, international students will be advised to take Japanese lessons before enrolling. Osaka University welcomes students who are scholarship grantees of the country’s government. Organized by the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, & Technology, these Osaka University scholarships are offered to incoming undergraduate and graduate students. There are two ways to achieve this grant and it is through Embassy Recommendation or University Recommendation.

For Embassy Recommendation, interested undergraduate students should start with applying for the scholarship at Japanese Embassies and Consulate Generals. Once the applicant is accepted, he or she is to take Japanese language lessons at either Tokyo University of Foreign Studies or at Osaka University’s Center for Japanese Language & Culture for one year. Following this, the applicant needs to pass the screening process at his or her chosen university. If successful, the next step is the enrollment procedure.

Similar to the undergraduate applicants’ first step, future graduate students are also required to consult the Japanese Embassies and Consulate Generals. There will also be a preliminary screening to be conducted which is composed of a documentary examination, written examination, and interview. After this, the selection committee and universities are then to work hand in hand to determine the scholarship grantees.

Furthermore, graduate students who do not yet have a good command of the Japanese language will be advised to take a Japanese training course at the International Student Center for six months.
