How do I apply to the University of Groningen Scholarships?

Students can choose from several scholarships and grants depending on their field of study. Depending on the type of scholarship, students may first be required to secure your admissions to the specific degrees for each scholarship.

University of Groningen Scholarships for International Students

1. Scholarship for Non-EU / EEA Students

This scholarship at the University of Groningen is available to students who are not from the European Economic Area but are seeking admission to the BSc in Global Responsibility and Leadership program and the MSc in Sustainable Entrepreneurship program.

The applicants need to submit their applications for their chosen program. At the same time, they should submit their scholarship application. You may check the scholarship link for the updated email address. The application process usually starts from March 1 until May 1 of the same year.

The distribution of the scholarship fund to eligible students is typically in September and is valid only in their first year.

2. The Holland Scholarship

As the name implies, the Holland Scholarship is available to international students who want to pursue a master’s degree in Holland. It is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science. There are two schedules for the application period. The first call usually begins on November 1 and ends on February 1 of the following year. The second call starts on February 2 and ends on May 1. Please check the scholarship link above for updates.

There are some points to consider when applying for this University of Groningen scholarship. First, applicants should not be from an EEA member country. Also, they should not possess a degree from any educational institution in the Netherlands before application but are willing to study in the Netherlands. Additionally, good grades from the applicants’ undergraduate degrees will be a basis for eligibility.

Please note that the amount offered worth 5000 Euros will be given to the recipients as a one-time payment during their first year of studies. The scholarship grant can help with living costs.

3. The Florentino Garcia Martinez Research Master Scholarship

  • Degrees Offered: Master’s in Hebrew Bible, early Judaism, and the Dead Sea Scrolls.

The scholarship will be funded by the Qumran Institute of the Faculty of Theology and Religious Studies of the University of Groningen to applicants after a thorough evaluation. The scholarship will grant financial aid worth 1000 Euros to qualified applicants.

Only excellent students will be eligible for this University of Groningen scholarship. To qualify for the scholarship, the applicants must secure two recommendation letters, an essay or thesis they completed in their Bachelor’s degree, a letter of motivation for applying to the Research Master’s program, and a list of marks from their Bachelor’s degree. In addition, they will need to provide a plan on how they plan to spend the scholarship fund.

4. The Erik Bleumink Fund

The Erik Bleumink Fund by the University of Groningen is available to help international students from developing countries acquire a Master’s Degree in any of the fields offered by the university. Check out the criteria and the list of countries here.

In contrast with those mentioned above, this type of University of Groningen scholarship does not accept active applications. Instead, the University of Groningen Admissions Office with the faculty will select nominees from students who have received admissions to a master’s program in the university. The nominees will then receive an invitation to apply for the scholarship.

Eligible applicants will then receive the scholarship that will cover the tuition fees, health insurance, living allowance, flight tickets, and books for a one-year or a two-year Master Degree Program. You can see the list of the programs here.

These scholarships at the University of Groningen for international students listed above are offered annually, and a new wave of students may apply for them every coming year. However, the University of Groningen also offers scholarships and grants that may last only one term or shorter.
