The Republic of Serbia is a small country in the Balkan peninsula in southeast Europe. Located strategically where the civilizations of the East and the West meet, Serbia is a place of rich history, culture, and tantalizing cuisine. Above all, it is one of Europe’s most welcoming countries for international students, primarily because there is many scholarships in Serbia available for international students and its quality of education.

Belgrade, the capital city of Serbia, is its largest and most developed city and one of the biggest cities in the Balkans. It is Serbia’s center of the economy, culture, arts, and entertainment, which houses over 10 000 events every year. Some of these are international film festivals, theatre performances, and music festivals. Most of these organizations offer significant discounts for both Serbian and international students, contributing to student life quality.

However, the main reason for international students to come to Serbia is an affordable worldwide recognized degree. Most popular programs are in medicine, economics, and architecture, but there are plenty of choices, especially at the state universities.

Living Costs in Serbia for International Students

Low costs of living are one of Serbia’s attractive features for international students. Excluding the accommodation fees, a student on a budget can live comfortably from EUR 200 to EUR 400 a month.

Belgrade is Serbia’s most expensive city, where a single apartment rent can range from EUR 150 to EUR 250 plus the utilities. Sharing rent in such cases can be a much cheaper option than staying at the dorm. Moreover, students might find dorms more expensive than private accommodation, mainly due to the limited number of rooms. For instance, a single bedroom at the dorm might cost EUR 420, while a shared room usually is EUR 350.

Novi Sad is the second most expensive city, followed by Nis and Kragujevac. However, due to limited student dormitory capacities, international student organizations assist in providing private accommodation, which can be as low as EUR 100 a month.

On the other hand, student canteens and cafeterias are available for all students, and they offer a meal for as little as EUR 1.

Can international students work in Serbia?

International students are allowed to work in Serbia, but they need to have both a residence permit and a work permit. As Serbia is constantly employing more foreign nationals, finding work is possible. Still, the international student must bear in mind that these are primarily full-time offers so that the work-study balance is not affected.
