The University of Tokyo was established in 1877 as the first imperial university. Based in the vibrant city of Tokyo, it is committed to becoming one of the leading research centers in the world. It has 10 faculties and 15 graduate schools, with more than 30,000 students registered.

The learning system is different from other universities in Japan. Before choosing a major, students are required to take two years of general education.

Currently, it is ranked #24 in QS Top Universities Ranking and is considered the 15th best Asian University. In 2014, it was ranked the second university in the world for the number of alumni in CEO positions.

It is Japan’s best university, a world-class research center, and home to an energetic student body. As a result of its increased enrolment of international students, it now offers programs in English. For more information, you can check this page. Now, let’s take a look at the University of Tokyo scholarships for international students.

How do I apply to University of Tokyo Scholarships?

The University of Tokyo offers a wide range of scholarships. Some are provided by the university itself, while others can be granted by external institutions.

In order to apply, you must first be admitted to the university.

Undergraduate Admissions

Undergraduate admissions are divided into two groups.

English Programs

Currently, the University of Tokyo offers two different programs in English. The first one is the Komaba program (PEAK) which is provided by the College of Arts and Sciences. For the first two years, undergraduates study liberal arts and then proceed to a two-year specialization.

To apply to this program, an account at the PEAK program webpage must be created. Here, all the required information must be uploaded among other documents. If you wish to apply to this program, it is important to know that you must request two reference letters. Once all required information has been uploaded, the application must be submitted before the deadline.

For further information please refer to PEAK’s webpage.

The second English Program is the Global Science Course (GSC). This program allows transfer students who have completed their first 2 years in their home university to transfer to UTokyo.

To be able to be part of the GSC program, applicants must register on the GSC website. The application form on it must be filed before the due date. Here, information such as personal data, education, and English qualifications will be provided. Afterward, the application will be reviewed by the university.

Japanese Programs

For Japanese programs, students are divided into two groups depending on their migratory status. Type 1 students are what can be considered “international applicants”, while Type 2 students have a permanent resident status. The only difference between both is that Type 1 applicants must take the Japanese University Admission for International Students (JASSO) evaluation.

All applicants must present an English Test (TOEFL or IELTS) and complete the application online before the due date.

Graduate Admissions

Graduate applicants can enroll as regular students or international researchers. Regular degree programs require an entrance examination by the University of Tokyo. Both Masters/Doctoral applicants and potential postgraduate researchers must refer to their corresponding Graduate school to see further requirements.
