Kiel University, also known as Christian Albrecht Universität zu Kiel (CAU), began operations in 1665. It is the oldest university in Schleswig-Holstein. The university has lived by its motto Pax Optima Rerum, which means “Peace is the highest of all goods” in its over 350-year history. CAU participates in many partnerships with companies, governments, universities, and research facilities in Germany and abroad. These partnerships allow Kiel University to share its research expertise, learning strategies, and teaching initiatives with its partners. At the same time, CAU can learn from the ever-dynamic global environment. Here, we will go over some of the best Kiel University scholarships for international students.

CAU upholds and respects diversity and equality among its students, staff, and faculty. It doesn’t tolerate discrimination against age, gender, sexual orientations, religion, race, social status, or disabilities. The university continues to adjust its facilities and programs to cater to its diverse population. CAU also offers a flexible working schedule and part-time programs to support staff and students with families, making it a family-oriented university.

How do I apply to Kiel University Scholarships?

The good thing about Kiel University is that all programs are tuition-free. However, you must show proof of financial capacity to shoulder the living costs of studying in Germany before you can get a visa.

For a more organized procedure, you may follow three steps. First, secure an offer for admission at CAU. Then, apply for a scholarship using the admission offer as part of the requirements. Finally, apply for a visa. You can find more details below.

International students without A-level qualifications equivalent to the German Abitur may not directly pursue an undergraduate degree at Kiel University. Instead, they may need to take a preparatory course. Please check more details here.

Students directly entering CAU must submit academic documents required by the university and scholarship providers with an accompanying notarized German translation.

CAU administers courses in either English or German. International students without sufficient German language skills may apply for German Courses. There are some program-specific language requirements for English-taught classes that you may find from the degree program’s Department Office.

The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and Kiel University have a unique agreement regarding granting stipends to Master’s Degree and Ph.D. students. The university website indicates that students can only receive an allowance from DAAD in exceptional cases if they have already begun their studies at a German university.

This may not always be the case with DAAD Scholarships. You may consult the Faculty or Department you wish to enter or the International Office for the updated information about the agreement between CAU and DAAD.

DAAD Scholarships for Master’s Degrees and Ph.D. Degrees at CAU have specific language certificate requirements. Be sure to meet these requirements to qualify for a scholarship.

After securing admissions to CAU and an offer letter for the scholarship, students from countries outside the EU required to get a visa must comply with the immigration requirements. You may find visa and study permit requirements here.
