Kyungpook University, also known as KNU or Kyungdae, is a comprehensive national university in Daegu Metropolitan City of Gyeongbuk Province, South Korea. Since its establishment in 1946, it has fostered the growth of young emerging individuals around the globe and giving them a place in the world. It continuously strives for the global stage and tops the charts as one of Korea’s best national universities.

The university was originally a regional educational hub developing the Colleges of Education, Medicine, and Agriculture in the province of Daegu. In recent years, it now holds its world-class reputation as it leads the development of the high-tech electronic industry in South Korea. It is known for its certified international standard of teaching and research in various aspects and disciplines.

The university has partnerships with 469 universities and research institutions from over 59 different countries around the world. How do I Apply to the Kyungpook National University Scholarships?

Kyungpook National University provides a wide range of scholarship opportunities to international students to support the tuition fees and other living expenses during their stay in South Korea. Students must be applying for undergraduate or postgraduate research or coursework at Kyungdae and receive their letter of acceptance to be eligible for the scholarships.

Applicants must satisfy specific Korean Language requirements, which depend on their chosen programs. Most courses will ask for a TOPIK certificate of at least level 3 or higher, which students must have taken in a Korean Language Institute of a university.

Undergraduate applicants must have completed 12 years of elementary and high school education; and submit a statement of purpose, academic transcripts, English or Korean Language test certificate, copy of valid passport, and other supporting documents.

Postgraduate applicants must certify that they have completed their Bachelor’s and/or Master’s degree. There will be other requirements depending on the program they are applying to.

Kyungpook University Scholarships for International Students

1. Global Korea Scholarship (GKS)

  • Scholarship amount: fully-funded tuition fees, a KRW 200,000 resettlement allowance, a minimum of KRW 900,000 for living allowances, a monthly paid medical insurance of KRW 20,000, a quarterly paid language course of KRW 800,000, research support of up to KRW 240,000 per semester, etc.,
  • Degrees offered: Masters and/or Ph.D.

The Global Korea Scholarship, formerly known as the Korean Government Scholarship Program (KGSP), is a fully-funded scholarship award that will finance international students who want to pursue their graduate studies in South Korea. These scholarships will help students build their future and career at one of the top universities in the country. The Korean Government also wants to strengthen its relationship with other nations worldwide.

The scholarship available at Kyungpook University is for all nationalities except those who hold Korean citizenship. Candidates must be applying for a Master’s degree or Ph.D. research program in one of GKS’s partner Korean universities to qualify. They must be under 40 years old and are among their class honors (in their Bachelor’s or Master’s) or have an equivalent final grade of 90%. Applicants must certify that they’re in good health and are not recipients of other scholarship awards.

Students who will guarantee a slot for the program may receive a fully paid tuition fee (of total cost not exceeding 5 million KRW per semester). They will also receive a free flight ticket, a resettlement allowance upon their entry to South Korea, a living allowance, a monthly paid medical insurance, research and language course support, and other grants.

Students may submit their applications directly to their chosen Korean university or via the Korean embassy in their home countries.

2. Kyungpook International Graduate Scholarship (KINGS)

The Kyungpook International Graduate Scholarship (KINGS) is exclusive for international students who guarantee admission to a graduate program at Kyungpook University in Daegu, South Korea. The scholarship is available to all nationalities except for Korean citizens, which applies to a 2-year Master’s or Ph.D. degree program and/or a 4-year combined Master’s and Ph.D. degree program.

Students must receive an offer for admission at Kyungpook University to be eligible for the scholarship. General requirements for admission application include a pre-qualification degree (Bachelor’s or Master’s degree), certified copies of academic transcripts and awards, proof of English language proficiency, a personal statement, and a copy of a valid passport. These may vary depending on the program students are applying for.

There is no separate application for this Kyungpook University scholarship program. Students must enroll in the KINGS-approved course for their profile to be nominated. Their applications will undergo selection processes. Once accepted, they will receive a slot for the award.

3. Support Program for Self-financed Students

The Korean Government will award this support grant to international students financing their undergraduate studies at a university in South Korea. The scholarship program aims to encourage students to pursue college education in Korea and build an outlook of high-quality education in the country. The scholarship will help self-supporting and talented young individuals find their place in the world.

This scholarship available at Kyungpook University is applicable for all international students who will study a full-time undergraduate program at any higher educational institution in Korea. Applicants must hold a high school diploma or equivalent and have excellent leadership skills. They must also show good interpersonal and communication skills. Students must prove that they meet the minimum English and Korean language proficiency requirements of their chosen university.
