Living Costs in Vietnam for International Students

Living in Vietnam depends on one’s lifestyle, but one thing is certain – living like a local can be highly inexpensive. One-bedroom rent in Ho Chi Minh City is not more than USD 200 a month, while a fast food meal can be as little as USD 1. The Internet, water, electricity, and gas for a motorbike, the most efficient transportation device in Vietnam, amount to an extra USD 50 a month.

Can international students work in Vietnam?

International students can work in Vietnam if they receive an employment offer, but finding a job will be difficult, as the employer would need proof that no skilled Vietnamese can be hired for the position. On the other hand, part-time work that requires English skills might be possible, but commonly, an employee would not have a secured permit.

Top Universities in Country:

The number one university in Vietnam is the Vietnam National University in Hanoi, focusing on research. According to the QS Rankings, it is ranked in the 150 top universities established under 50 years ago.

The second most significant higher-level institution is the Ton Duc Thang University, which is in the best 125 universities in Asia and 260th best university for one of the engineering subjects.

The third best rated is the Duy Tan University, a private university in Da Nang, followed by the Vietnam National University in Ho Chi Minh City, and Hanoi University of Science and Technology, located in the country’s capital.

Best Scholarships in Vietnam

1. TDTU Graduate Scholarship

Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) Scholarships are an excellent opportunity for international students to continue their higher education pursuits. This Vietnam scholarship welcomes all international students with a strong record of academic excellence with a focus on research. The applications will be considered by the TDTU committee only once the student is already enrolled in either the master’s or the Ph.D. program at the university.

Future grads at TDTU can opt for one out of three scholarships offered by the university. The Full Scholarship covers all tuition and accommodation fees for the international applicants. The other option is the Partial Scholarship, which accommodates a student outside of Vietnam with a 50 percent reduction in tuition and housing fees. The Research Scholarship is based on the publication record in the reputable and peer-reviewed journals relevant to the TDTU.

2. RMIT Vietnam International Excellence Scholarships

The Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Vietnam (RMIT Vietnam) is a world-class Australian university with a branch based in Ho-Chi Minh City. International students may apply for one of the many study fields in Economics and Finance, Business, Management, Aviation, Design and Fashion, Languages, among many. Non-Vietnamese high school graduates are welcome to apply for undergrad international scholarships.

The applicants must have a minimum of 75% of their GPA in grade 12 to be considered. International students need to submit their academic IELTS score of 6.5 with all bands over 6.0. average.

RMIT Vietnam offers some of the top scholarships in Vietnam, with 14 scholarship opportunities. Unfortunately, full scholarships are not offered at RMIT, but the significant reduction in fees makes this university a brilliant choice for a reputable bachelor’s degree. Six applicants will have their fees down to 50%, while eight students can expect a reduction in tuition fees of 25%.

3. ASEAN-Vietnam ICT Scholarship

ASEAN-Vietnam ICT Scholarship, also known as AVIS+, is a regional scholarship offered to students from ASEAN member countries with the inclusion of Japan and Korea. ASEAN international students can apply if they have a passport from Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore, the Philippines, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Laos, Cambodia, or Brunei.

This scholarship in Vietnam is funded by the Posts and Telecommunications Institute of Technology (PTIT), and its eligible candidates would pursue their degrees in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The sponsors are reputable ICT enterprises like VNPT, CNC, and other corporations which desire to create leaders in the industry.

Interested candidates are young leaders from 18 to 25 years of age who will be awarded a full, tuition-free undergraduate program. Another requirement is a GPA of no less than 7.0 on a scale of 10. Moreover, for the candidates whose high school language of instruction is other than English, they are required to submit the IELTS (academic) test score of 5.5 or above.

International applicants can benefit from the tuition-free scholarship, health insurance, and two round-trip international airfares. On top of that, an allowance of VND 10,000,000 (USD 425) a month is provided, along with a USD 100 Vietnamese holiday bonus.

4. Vin University Scholarships

International students applying for the Vin University Scholarships can choose their degrees in Business and Management, Engineering and Computer Sciences, Health and Arts. The university is praising its multicultural community, which accommodates both merit-based international applicants and need-sensitive students.

Eligible applicants for their Merit-Based Scholarship must have a proven track record of academic excellence, creativity, and commitment. If accepted, Vin University awards them with a scholarship ranging from USD 126,000 to USD 141,500, which covers from 90 to 100 percent in tuition fees. Exceptional candidates will receive a free tuition scholarship, with an additional allowance of USD 1500 for their living expenses.

Scholarships for need-sensitive students include a reduction in tuition fees from 50 to 80 percent, which covers the reduction in cost from USD 70,000 to USD 112,000. Future beneficiaries of this fund can apply once they get accepted and enrolled in the program.

5. Vietnam Japan University Master’s Program Scholarship

Vietnam Japan University is a joint effort of the two governments to create opportunities for Japanese, Vietnamese, and International Students offered for the master’s degrees only.

The special scholarship at this Vietnamese university involves a significant reduction in fees for the students of the two countries since the governments cut down up to 70 percent of the total tuition fees. This amounts to VND 110,000,000 tuition waiver for international students.

Japanese Government Scholarship Program is open to all applicants except Japanese nationals for all study programs, and their tuition waiver can range from 50 to 100 percent in tuition fees. The awardees are planned to stay for only one academic semester.

On the other hand, Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF) Scholarship caters to students from Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia, and it covers full tuition, health care, round-trip tickets, and a monthly allowance of USD 200. Nationals of these countries are required to stay for a minimum of two years at the university.
